Mick Foley — Have a Nice Day

Mick Foley did things no one else would. He wrestled for 20 years in high school gyms and coliseum cellars to earn the right to fall off the Hell in a Cell. He had an ear ripped off in Germany and kept wrestling. He wore a mask, carried a sock named Mr. Socko, debuted tie-dye and platform boots, and somehow made every single character compelling. Three distinct personalities. One heart the size of Madison Square Garden.

The Three Faces of Foley

1996–1998
Mankind — The Monster Within
Mankind debuted in the WWF crawling through the floor of Madison Square Garden, locked in psychological torment, a product of a disturbed childhood backstory that Foley sold completely. The character was grotesque yet sympathetic — a man so damaged by the world that he found comfort only in pain. His feud with The Undertaker in 1996-97 produced some of the most brutal matches of the era.
1997–1998
Dude Love — The Tie-Dye Dreamer
When Mankind needed a lighter touch, Dude Love appeared — the free-spirited hippie alter ego complete with flowers, tie-dye, and platform shoes. The character was absurd and brilliant simultaneously, showing Foley's comedic genius. His feud with Steve Austin over the WWF Championship in 1998 under Vince McMahon's thumb produced some of the era's most entertaining TV.
1998–2000
Cactus Jack — The Hardcore Legend Returns
When the situation called for real danger, Cactus Jack emerged. The original wild man, the barbed wire and thumbtack specialist from the ECW and WCW days who had legitimately lost an ear. His 2000 feud with Triple H culminated in a Royal Rumble Street Fight that many consider the greatest match in Royal Rumble history — and then a Hell in a Cell at No Way Out that came close to matching it.

Defining Moments

Hell in a Cell — King of the Ring 1998
The defining moment of Foley's career and possibly the most iconic spot in wrestling history. Thrown off the top of the Hell in a Cell by The Undertaker through the announce table, then carried back to the top and chokeslammed through the roof. Jim Ross's call — "As God as my witness, that man is broken in half" — echoed through the decades. Foley continued the match with a dislocated shoulder and a tooth in his nose.
WWF Championship — January 4, 1999 Raw
The Monday Night War moment of the decade. Tony Schiavone spoiled Mankind's championship victory on Nitro — "That'll put some butts in seats." Hundreds of thousands of viewers immediately switched channels to watch Mick Foley win the WWF title. WCW never recovered from the ratings swing that followed. The most expensive spoiler in wrestling history.
This Is Your Life — Highest Rated Raw Segment
The "This Is Your Life" segment with The Rock in 1999 remains the highest-rated segment in Monday Night Raw history. An awkward, improvised, thoroughly ridiculous 22 minutes that somehow generated a 9.0 cable rating. Neither man particularly liked it; everyone watching loved it. Pure unscripted chemistry between two generational talents.
Royal Rumble 2000 — Street Fight vs Triple H
Cactus Jack challenged Triple H for the WWF Championship in a Street Fight at the 2000 Royal Rumble. The match featured barbed wire, steps, thumbtacks, and a performance from both men at the absolute peak of their careers. Widely considered the greatest Royal Rumble match in history. Their rematch at No Way Out in Hell in a Cell matched it for brutality.
