The G1 Climax is the most gruelling tournament in professional wrestling. Running through July and August, NJPW's round-robin block format sees Japan's and the world's finest wrestlers compete across multiple nights for the right to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom. The winner carries a briefcase — and a promise of greatness.

Round-Robin Format
The G1 Climax operates across two blocks — historically A Block and B Block — with each competitor facing every other member of their block. Points accumulate over weeks: two points for a win, zero for a loss. Block winners then face off in a final to determine who earns the G1 briefcase. This format rewards endurance, strategy, and technical excellence over dozens of nights and is unlike anything else in world wrestling.

Past G1 Winners
The G1 Climax trophy shelf reads like a who's who of modern wrestling greatness. Kazuchika Okada is the most decorated winner with multiple victories, setting the standard for what a G1 champion should look like. Kenny Omega's 2016 victory is still talked about as one of the best tournament runs ever. Other winners include Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kota Ibushi, Jay White, Will Ospreay, Jon Moxley, and SANADA — each winning year defining the IWGP title scene for months afterward.

G1 Briefcase Implications
Winning the G1 means earning a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in January at Wrestle Kingdom — NJPW's equivalent of WrestleMania at Tokyo Dome. The G1 Climax 2026 winner will spend the latter half of the year building toward that Wrestle Kingdom moment, making every block match a stepping stone toward the biggest night in New Japan's calendar. The 2026 field includes NJPW mainstays plus international talent from NJPW Strong and partner promotions.
