The Unlikely WWE Championship Run
Jinder Mahal's 2017 WWE Championship reign remains one of the most shocking title wins in modern WWE history. Released by the company in 2014 as a curtain-jerker, Mahal returned in 2016, underwent a dramatic physical transformation and quickly climbed the SmackDown card. His defeat of Randy Orton at Backlash 2017 — aided by the Singh Brothers — sent shockwaves through the wrestling world.
As the Modern Day Maharaja, Mahal leaned into his Indian heritage as a villainous character, speaking Punjabi during promos and using the Khallas (full nelson slam) as his finisher. The championship reign lasted 170 days, with Mahal defending against Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura and others before losing the title at Clash of Champions to AJ Styles.
Mahal's title run was controversial — many fans and critics argued his elevation was rushed — but it drove significant interest in the Indian market and demonstrated WWE's global expansion strategy in action.
