Finn Bálor's journey to WWE started in New Japan and on the British independent scene, where he spent years as Prince Devitt — one of the most innovative performers in world wrestling. His work helped establish the Bullet Club, one of the most influential factions in the last twenty years. When he arrived in NXT he was already a polished veteran, and his work helped build the brand into the global phenomenon it became. Bálor was never a prospect — he arrived as the finished article.

Finn Bálor became the first-ever WWE Universal Champion at SummerSlam 2016 — a moment of genuine historical significance. The fact that he had to vacate the title the following night due to a serious shoulder injury made the achievement bittersweet, but it did not diminish what he accomplished. Bálor won the Universal Championship in his first main roster pay-per-view match. He has remained one of the most respected performers on the roster ever since, and his first reign remains a conversation point years later because of what could have been.
