Transitioning to Friday nights requires a different set of tools, specifically narrative hooks that justify weekly television time. Right now, he is trapped in that familiar middle ground where he gets work, but none of it actually matters.

The mechanics of a SmackDown debut

Watching Saints' work over the past two months reveals an athlete still adjusting to camera cuts and trimmed match lengths. In NXT, he could rely on long-form sequences, building slowly from standard headlocks into high-impact spots. SmackDown operates on a far tighter clock, often giving mid-card segments fewer than 8 minutes of total bell-to-bell action.

In his recent matches, Saints has attempted to condense his signature offense, relying heavily on his quick-step lariat and sharp corner strikes. Yet without a compelling rival across the ring, these moves lack emotional weight. Work rate alone has almost never sustained a newcomer on Friday nights without a distinct feud to anchor them.

Where creative is dropping the ball

The problem is not Saints' performance, but the complete absence of stakes. He comments that there is still a lot he wants to do on the main roster, which is a mild way of acknowledging that his ceiling has not even been tested yet. Placing him in random tag team matches or quick singles matches against established veterans only proves he can hold his own; it does not build him into a draw.

WWE has a habit of introducing NXT talent with zero explanation of who they are to casual viewers who skip Tuesday nights. Saints arrived in May with a title lineage from NXT, yet SmackDown commentary treated him like a blank slate. That disconnect immediately strips a performer of their hard-earned credibility before they even hit the ring.

The path to a meaningful run

To fix this trajectory, SmackDown creative needs to commit to a multi-week program that forces Saints to react to genuine adversity. Giving him a target—perhaps an established mid-card champion or a ruthless veteran who cuts off his high-impact moves—gives the audience something to invest in beyond neat technique.

Saints possesses the raw skill and timing to be a reliable fixture on the roster for years. However, if he remains adrift without a real narrative thread, his May call-up will join a long list of NXT transitions that fizzled out before ever truly starting.
