A Hero's Welcome in Columbia

The Colonial Life Arena is going to be deafening tonight. Trick Williams is coming home, and he’s bringing the United States Championship with him. It’s the kind of homecoming that feels earned, not manufactured by a marketing team in Stamford.

Williams is coming off a brutal defense against Sami Zayn at Backlash. That match was a masterclass in storytelling, even if the 18-minute runtime felt a bit bloated toward the end. Trick proved he can hang with the technicians, but the physical cost was visible in his limp as he left the arena in Lyon.

Tonight isn't just about a celebration, though. The reports of an "absent star" being backstage have the locker room on edge. According to WrestlingNews.co, a major name is expected at the show. If the rumors are true, the blue brand is about to get a lot more violent.

The Ghost of the Ring General

The name on everyone’s lips is Ilja Dragunov. The Mad Dragon hasn’t been seen since the post-WrestleMania shuffle, leading to speculation about his health or a possible creative stall. But Dragunov isn’t a man who stalls; he’s a man who waits for the right moment to strike.

That moment is tonight, and the target is almost certainly Gunther. The Ring General has been operating on a different level since moving to SmackDown. He’s already cleared out half the roster with those thunderous chops that leave welts the size of dinner plates.

We’ve seen this movie before in the empty arenas of London and the Performance Center. Dragunov is the only person who doesn't just survive Gunther; he thrives in the pain. Their history is written in bruises and broken spirits, and a renewal of that rivalry is exactly what SmackDown needs to bridge the gap to the summer.

"I don't just want to win. I want to feel the soul of my opponent break under my hands."

That quote from Dragunov during his NXT tenure still rings true. If he steps into the ring with Gunther tonight, expect the level of physicality to reach a peak we haven't seen since their 5-star encounter in 2021. This isn't just wrestling; it's a car crash with a choreographed ending.

The Jade Cargill Problem

While the men's side of the bracket is heating up, the women's division is facing a bit of a crisis. Jade Cargill is a physical marvel, but her booking is starting to feel repetitive. Last week, she dismantled Rhea Ripley in a segment that left the former champion looking surprisingly vulnerable.

Dismantling Rhea is a statement, but at what point do we actually get a competitive match instead of a squash? The crowd in Columbia wants to see Jade tested, not just posing over a fallen Mami. There’s a risk of the fans turning on Jade if she continues to run through the most over women on the roster without breaking a sweat.

Ripley is reportedly seeking medical clearance for tonight, but even if she shows up, she’s walking into a buzzsaw. The physical gap between Jade and the rest of the field is 100 percent the biggest hurdle for the creative team right now. They’ve built a monster, but they haven't built a cage that can hold her.

The Bloodline's Fading Gravity

We also have to talk about the Bloodline. Solo Sikoa has done a decent job of holding the fort, but the story has entered that awkward phase where it feels like a cover band playing the hits. Without Roman Reigns as the central sun, the gravity of the group is wobbling.

The addition of Jacob Fatu has added some much-needed insanity to the group, but the motivation feels thin. Are they still protecting a legacy, or are they just three guys in black hoodies causing trouble? Tonight needs to provide some clarity on where this is heading as we approach the summer months.

If Roman isn't coming back soon, Solo needs a signature win that doesn't involve three interferences and a low blow. A potential clash with Randy Orton or Kevin Owens is on the horizon, but it feels like we've seen those combinations a dozen times. The fatigue is starting to set in for a story that has dominated television for years.

Predictions for the Night

The main event is rumored to be a tag team match featuring LA Knight and a mystery partner against Grayson Waller and Austin Theory. Knight is still the most popular man in the room, but he’s been spinning his wheels since WrestleMania. He needs a program that feels high-stakes, not just another feud over who has the better talk show segment.

I expect the mystery partner to be the aforementioned Dragunov. Pairing the most intense man in the company with the most charismatic is a strange choice on paper, but it might be just weird enough to work. Dragunov’s silent intensity would be a perfect foil for Knight’s constant yapping.

My prediction: Ilja Dragunov makes his presence felt by ending the main event with a Torpedo Moscow that sends Austin Theory into the second row. Trick Williams will have his moment of glory with a Trick Shot knee to the jaw of a returning mid-carder, but the night will belong to the Mad Dragon. SmackDown is finally getting the violent reset it deserves.

The Colonial Life Arena is the perfect backdrop for this. South Carolina fans are notoriously loud and appreciative of the more "stiff" style of wrestling. When Dragunov hits that first H-Bomb, the roof is going to come off the building. It’s time to move past the post-Mania hangover and start building toward the next big peak.

One negative note: I'm hearing the tag team titles might not be defended on television for another three weeks. That's a huge mistake. Leaving the champions off the show while the division languishes in meaningless six-man tags is a disservice to the talent. Let's hope the writers change their minds before the 8 PM kickoff.
