Instead, the division took a detour through Saudi Arabia. Ricky Saints earned a shot at the champion by defeating Hayes in a No. 1 Contender’s Match. Trick Williams retained the gold at Night of Champions, putting Saints away with the Trick Shot knee strike.

Rather than letting the champion celebrate a clean athletic victory, WWE introduced celebrity interference. Lil Yachty attacked Saints with a kendo stick and hit a sloppy People’s Elbow. This cheap pop undermined the work Saints did to build credibility.

Despite his loss to Saints, Carmelo Hayes remains central to this championship cycle. As Ringside News reported, the long-term plan for the summer show remains Williams versus Hayes. The Saints detour was simply a mechanical holding pattern.

Williams' physical style is built on explosive power, but his pacing still reveals developmental roots. Saints, by contrast, is a smoother in-ring technician who can carry the flow of a match. Their encounter in Jeddah highlighted this contrast, showing that Williams still needs experienced opponents to look like a championship draw.

The emotional weight of the eventual Hayes matchup is what makes it the true priority. Their history as the dominant duo of NXT created a deep connection with the audience. Bringing that rivalry to the main roster at SummerSlam validates the developmental system far more than a filler match with Saints.

However, the inclusion of Lil Yachty was a distinct booking misstep. Having a musical guest easily dispatch a top contender with a weapon makes the active roster look weak. It suggests the secondary titles are treated as promotional props rather than serious athletic prizes.

The Rhea Ripley Casualty List

When a top-tier champion goes down, the shockwaves tear through the entire roster. Rhea Ripley's recent knee injury has forced the writing team to discard weeks of television. Her removal from the Night of Champions poster signaled a deeper creative crisis backstage.

The injury reportedly occurred during or shortly after WWE Clash in Italy, where Ripley retained her title against Jade Cargill. Ripley worked live events during the European tour before SmackDown revealed she was being evaluated. Backstage, the uncertainty has put the entire division on hold.

"They did announce Friday night she sustained an injury. From what we’re told, they’re still waiting to figure out how long this will be and if she will miss SummerSlam."

Before her knee gave out, Ripley’s SummerSlam path was clear. WWE had penciled her in to defend the title against either Alexa Bliss or Jacy Jayne. Both options are now tabled, leaving the championship in creative limbo.

The damage extends far beyond Ripley’s immediate challengers. A long-rumored marquee match between Jade Cargill and Charlotte Flair is now in jeopardy. According to WrestleVotes, that match was penciled in for the summer show, but the champion's absence changes everything:

"If she misses SummerSlam, a lot of plans change. We reported how at one point Jade Cargill vs. Charlotte Flair was penciled in. I believe that match gets changed if Rhea Ripley is affected by the injury."

If Ripley cannot compete, WWE cannot afford to burn a Cargill-Flair dream match in the midcard. One or both of those stars will be required to anchor the vacant title picture. The women's division must now pivot to a defensive strategy, shuffling its remaining healthy draws to patch the hole.

Ripley has been the workhorse of the division, anchoring the product through physical, high-stakes matches. Her match against Cargill in Italy went over fifteen minutes and featured high-impact power moves. That physical toll has clearly caught up with her, demonstrating the risks of their intense style.

Replacing her presence is a tactical nightmare for the creative team. Ripley represents a rare booking archetype: the dominant champion who commands respect as a babyface despite heel actions. Shifting the title to a pure babyface like Cargill would require completely rewriting the roster dynamics.

The fallback option is almost certainly Charlotte Flair. Whenever a championship picture breaks, WWE leans on Flair's pedigree to restore stability. But rushing her back from her own recovery risks overexposing her and stalling the momentum of newer stars like Tiffany Stratton.

The Royce Keys Re-Routing

A canceled match can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. Royce Keys was originally scheduled to face GUNTHER at SummerSlam before creative shifted toward Nick Aldis. While losing that marquee spot looks like a demotion, the reality is far more interesting.

Keys is being re-routed into WWE's most lucrative narrative engine. Reports of creative shakeups for Keys indicate he is now integrated into the Bloodline saga. Solo Sikoa has repeatedly tried to recruit him over the past few months.

Keys resisted those advances, which cost him a singles match against Talla Tonga back in June. Now that the MFTs are broken up, the power dynamics are shifting. Keys could function as a target for Sikoa or an ally for the babyface resistance.

Moving Keys out of the GUNTHER match avoids a booking corner. A definitive loss to the Ring General could have stalled his momentum. Inserting him into the Bloodline keeps him in main-event segments while preserving his protection.

A match with GUNTHER would have been a physical clinic in defensive selling and hard-hitting pacing. Keys excels in matches of attrition, making him a perfect foil for the champion's chops. But that match would have had a predictable finish, whereas the Bloodline story offers endless creative flexibility.

Nick Aldis stepping into the active competitor role adds a new layer to SmackDown. It introduces administrative authority directly into the championship picture. This transition shifts the Intercontinental Title from an athletic prize into a political weapon.

Meanwhile, Keys' resistance to Sikoa's faction provides a rare midcard perspective on the family war. Most wrestlers steer clear of the Bloodline's path. By standing his ground, Keys becomes a relatable figure for fans who are tired of the faction's dominance.

Zilla Fatu and the NXT Gateway

The arrival of Zilla Fatu presents a unique developmental challenge. As the 26-year-old son of the late Umaga, Fatu carries a marquee family name. Still, WWE is resisting the temptation to throw him straight onto the main roster.

According to updates on Zilla Fatu's debut plans, WWE intends to start him in NXT. Despite his work in House of Glory, the jump to television requires a different level of polish. NXT will allow him to adjust to the system without main-roster pressure.

An NXT run allows Zilla to establish his own identity. If he debuts next to Solo Sikoa, he risks being viewed as a secondary character. Developing his work in NXT ensures he arrives on the main roster as a fully realized star.

This developmental patience is a welcome change for WWE. Shuffling young talent into main-event angles before they are ready often leads to fan backlash. Utilizing NXT protects Zilla, ensuring his eventual main-roster arrival feels earned rather than rushed.

Zilla inherits the physical intensity of his father, Edward Fatu, who was one of the most effective monster heels of his era. But the modern television era requires a different kind of charisma. NXT provides a safe laboratory to refine his promos and find his voice.

He also faces the challenge of carving out a niche separate from Jacob Fatu. Jacob's explosive, high-flying offense has already made a massive impression on audiences. Zilla must find a style that distinguishes him, rather than looking like an imitation.

Under the guidance of Shawn Michaels, the NXT developmental system is the perfect environment for this growth. Learning the nuances of camera placement and ring psychology will prepare him for the main roster. By the time he joins his family on SmackDown, he will be ready for the pressure.
