Pull up a barstool, grab a cold pint of whatever cheap domestic light beer is on tap, and let's talk about the absolute circus WWE is heading toward in Minneapolis. We are just weeks away from the massive two-night SummerSlam 2026 event at U.S. Bank Stadium. The card is already loaded with heavy hitters like Roman Reigns battling Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar locking horns with Oba Femi in a Hell in a Cell match.
But the rumor mill is spinning faster than a classic Rey Mysterio hurricanrana. WrestleTalk just dropped a massive list of nine potential additions that could turn this show into a legendary weekend. Let's look at the bookings, the boneheaded decisions, and what actually makes sense.
The Main Event Mess: Sami's Cowardly Reign and the Triple Threat
Let's start with the Undisputed WWE Championship picture. Sami Zayn shocked the entire world at Night of Champions 2026 by pinning Cody Rhodes in a triple threat match that also featured GUNTHER. The win was a shocker because Zayn spent his entire career as the lovable underdog babyface, but he won this one as a conniving heel.
Now the rumored plan is to throw Cody Rhodes and a returning CM Punk into a triple threat match against Sami Zayn in Minneapolis. Punk has been sitting on the shelf with an injury since WrestleMania. This would be a massive match, but the booking raises some serious questions.
Cody Rhodes is still the biggest babyface in the company and has been chasing his title back. CM Punk has a history of confrontations with Rhodes, but WWE has never actually given us the singles match we all want. Pitting them both against a heel Sami Zayn is a lazy way to protect both top stars from taking a loss.
It also threatens to turn Sami Zayn into a complete afterthought. Nobody actually believes Zayn is walking out of Minneapolis with the gold if he has to share the ring with Rhodes and Punk. It is a classic WWE booking trick where they throw all their biggest stars into one pot because they cannot figure out how to write a simple, compelling singles feud.
Authority Figures and General Manager Meltdowns
Speaking of weird booking, we need to talk about GUNTHER and Nick Aldis. Nick Aldis has not wrestled a single match since signing with WWE to become the SmackDown General Manager back in 2023. But at Night of Champions 2026, GUNTHER lost his mind after failing to win the title and shoved Aldis backstage.
Aldis did not back down and shoved the Ring General right back, sparking a massive locker room pull-apart. The incident landed Aldis on administrative leave, which is the oldest trick in the wrestling authority book. Now the word is they are building toward a physical showdown at SummerSlam.
This is a questionable decision that actively hurts GUNTHER. The man is a former longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion and one of the most protected monsters on the roster. Having him waste his momentum in a grudge match against a retired general manager who has not laced up a pair of boots in three years is a waste of everyone's time.
Over on the women's side of SmackDown, Rhea Ripley has her own GM-level headache to deal with. The faction known as Fatal Influence made their debut on the blue brand in April. Their leader, Jacy Jayne, immediately targeted Ripley and left the champion lying on their first night.
This has set up a potential title defense for Ripley against Jacy Jayne. But there is a massive complication because WWE recently announced that Ripley suffered a knee injury that is currently being evaluated. If Ripley is hobbled, putting her in the ring with a rising heel like Jayne could lead to a disastrous, slow-paced match.
Jayne has the charisma to be a major star, but she is not ready to carry a compromised Ripley to a classic. This booking feels rushed and desperate. It is a bad look.
Midcard Carnage: Masked Regrets and NXT Breakouts
Let's talk about the Intercontinental Championship, which is currently held by Penta. Penta debuted in the company in January 2025 with a massive win over Chad Gable. That loss sent Gable down a bizarre, embarrassing rabbit hole that we need to address.
Gable lost a Mask vs. Mask match in Mexico at AAA Noche de Los Grandes. After that humiliation, Gable spent weeks apologizing to every luchador he ever disrespected, eventually begging Penta for forgiveness. He claims his entire weird trip to Mexico was just a coping mechanism because he could not beat Penta.
Now, Gable is looking for redemption in his hometown of Minneapolis. While the storyline is objectively ridiculous, Gable is a phenomenal athlete who deserves a big hometown pop. Penta has been a fighting champion, and these two could easily put on a clinic if the writers let them wrestle instead of focusing on silly comedy.
Meanwhile, Trick Williams is set to defend his United States Championship against Drew McIntyre. Trick has been a rocket ship since his call-up from NXT at the start of 2026. He won the United States Championship by defeating Sami Zayn at WrestleMania, establishing himself as a premier babyface.
McIntyre is on a completely opposite trajectory. He lost to Jacob Fatu on night one of WrestleMania. Since then, the big man has been in a foul mood.
McIntyre will bring the raw power and veteran nastiness, while Trick brings the speed and crowd energy. It is exactly the high-stakes matchup SummerSlam needs to keep the crowd engaged. Trick needs a signature win over an established main eventer to solidify his run, and Drew is the perfect guy to make him look like a million bucks.
We also have a potential Women's United States Championship match on the horizon. Tiffany Stratton defended her title against Jade Cargill at Night of Champions 2026. Now she has a new challenger in Blake Monroe, who made her SmackDown debut on June 26 by attacking Giulia in London.
Giulia had just defeated Kiana James when Monroe jumped her out of nowhere. This debut was a bold statement, but throwing Monroe straight into a title match at SummerSlam feels premature. Stratton is excellent in her role, but Monroe needs to establish herself with the wider audience before challenging for gold.
Then there is the Women's Intercontinental Championship, currently held by Sol Ruca. Ruca won the title by defeating Becky Lynch at Clash in Italy 2026. WWE is reportedly planning a massive four-way match featuring Ruca, Lynch, Bayley, and Lyra Valkyria.
This feud got supercharged on the June 22 episode of Raw in London, where Lyra Valkyria turned heel by attacking Bayley after their tag team title match. Valkyria snapped after they lost to Paige and Brie Bella.
A four-way match would protect Ruca while letting the veterans do the heavy lifting. Valkyria's new attitude adds some much-needed edge to the match. This has the potential to be a chaotic, high-flying encounter that showcases the depth of the women's division.
A Clash of Tag Team Titans and a Grudge Match
Let's talk about the Raw tag team division, which just got a shot of adrenaline. The Street Profits defeated Bron Breakker and Austin Theory on Raw to capture the World Tag Team Championship, which marked a major title change. This victory marked their fourth world tag team title win and fifth overall championship run.
The natural next step is a dream match against The Usos. Jimmy and Jey Uso are back together. This match has all the ingredients to steal the entire weekend.
Both teams have incredible chemistry and a history of delivering high-stakes matches. The Street Profits have looked rejuvenated lately, and The Usos are always money on big stages. Expect a fast-paced match filled with superkicks, sky-high frog splashes, and near-falls.
Finally, we have the grudge match between Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill. Their rivalry goes all the way back to Cargill's debut in early 2024. The heat exploded at Clash in Italy 2026 when Flair helped Rhea Ripley retain the title against Cargill.
In retaliation, Cargill and her stablemates Michin and B-Fab attacked Flair backstage, injuring her knee and knocking her out of the Queen of the Ring tournament. Flair got her revenge by costing Cargill the Women's US title at Night of Champions 2026. This match is purely about bad blood, and it does not need a championship on the line to feel important.
It will be a battle of two of the most athletic women on the roster. Flair is the veteran gatekeeper, while Cargill is the powerhouse trying to claim the throne. The key will be keeping the action physical and avoiding over-booked interference from B-Fab and Michin.
WWE is taking some major gambles with the booking of this two-night event. Some storylines, like Chad Gable's masked identity crisis, are downright goofy. But the sheer star power on display makes SummerSlam 2026 a highly anticipated show.
