The shadow of Dynasty loomed large

AEW Dynasty 2026 arrives this April 12, and the card feels like it was written in a frantic hurry. Following the momentum—or lack thereof—from Revolution, Tony Khan is betting the house on star power to distract from inconsistent storytelling. While the talent in the ring is undeniably elite, the connective tissue between matches is fraying.

Don Callis announcing that Darby Allin will face a member of his Family is a textbook example of the current problem. It’s filler disguised as a blood feud. We know the match will have high-spot density, but without a compelling hook, it risks feeling like a house show main event rather than a pay-per-view milestone.

The booking math is not adding up

When you look at the updated Dynasty lineup, the pacing issues become glaringly obvious. Relying on surprise returns is a dangerous game when you’ve already played that card repeatedly throughout 2025. Fans are smart enough to spot a shortcut when they see one.

My biggest gripe? The lack of stakes for the mid-card talent. Some performers are trapped in an endless loop of random tag bouts that look good on paper but do nothing for their trajectory. A list of eight potential surprises might move tickets, but it doesn't build a sustainable future. If you need a shock return every six weeks just to hold the audience's attention, you aren't building a brand; you're just paying for dopamine hits.

My final call on Dynasty

Despite the criticism, the in-ring output will likely save the show from being a disaster. The technical floor of an AEW pay-per-view is simply too high to fail, even with mediocre creative decisions. Expect the main event to clock in at a 30-minute sprint that leaves the crowd satisfied regardless of the flimsy build-up.

However, the company needs to realize that work rate alone doesn't sustain viewership through the summer. They need a defined objective for their championships. I predict Dynasty will be remembered as a technically proficient but narratively hollow event, yielding an average rating of 7.2/10 from the hardest core viewers.
