WWE Women's Championship History — Every Era
From the Fabulous Moolah in 1956 to the Women's Revolution of 2015 and the dual-brand title era — seven decades of champions, storylines, and defining women's wrestling moments.
The Moolah Era and Early Champions (1956–1990s)
The WWE Women's Championship (originally the WWF Women's Championship) was established in 1956 and has a history that spans nearly seven decades. The Fabulous Moolah is the most dominant figure in the title's early history, holding the championship for an uninterrupted reign of approximately 28 years from 1956 to 1984 — a record that remains unchallenged, though the circumstances of that reign have been revisited by wrestling historians. Moolah's control of women's wrestling in the US during that period shaped the landscape far beyond the title itself.
The 1980s saw brief competitive periods with champions like Wendi Richter, whose feud with Moolah and involvement with Cyndi Lauper's "Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection" brought women's wrestling to a mainstream pop culture audience for the first time. The women's title went largely dormant in profile through the early 1990s before the emergence of characters like Sable and Chyna broadened what women's wrestling could be on WWE television, even if the championship itself was treated as secondary.
The Divas Championship era from 2008 to 2016 is now viewed by most fans as a creative low point — matches were often brief, character work was shallow, and the title was used primarily as a prop in storylines that had little to do with wrestling ability. It took a grassroots fan movement — the Divas Revolution hashtag campaign — and the arrival of Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, and Bayley from NXT to force WWE to take women's wrestling seriously again.
The Women's Revolution (2015–Present)
Charlotte Flair — 14+ Reigns
Charlotte Flair has held a women's title in WWE more than any other competitor — over 14 reigns spanning both the Raw Women's Championship and SmackDown Women's Championship since 2015. She has anchored every major women's story in WWE for a decade, and her combination of athleticism, character work, and willingness to put others over has made her the defining women's champion of the modern era.
Becky Lynch — "The Man"
Becky Lynch's 2018–19 run as "The Man" was one of the most organically generated star-making moments in WWE history. Her SmackDown Women's Championship run transitioned into the first women's main event of WrestleMania 35, where she held both the Raw and SmackDown women's titles simultaneously. Lynch became a mainstream crossover name and the most popular woman on WWE's roster during that period.
Bianca Belair — The EST of WWE
Bianca Belair's WrestleMania 37 victory over Sasha Banks in the first all-Black women's world title match in WWE history was a watershed moment. Belair has had multiple significant title reigns on both Raw and SmackDown, and her combination of extraordinary athleticism and charisma has made her one of the most complete women's performers in WWE history. Her 2026 status as one of the top women on the roster is well established.
Rhea Ripley — "Mami"
Rhea Ripley's ascent to the top of WWE's women's division came through NXT UK, NXT, and finally the main roster where she became the dominant force in women's wrestling from 2023 onwards. Her "Mami" character, combined with The Judgment Day faction alignment and undeniable in-ring credibility, made her Raw Women's title reigns appointment television. Ripley in 2026 is widely regarded as one of the best in-ring workers across all of WWE's roster.

The Women's Division in 2026
WWE's women's division in 2026 is the deepest it has ever been. The dual-brand structure — Raw Women's Championship on Monday nights, SmackDown Women's Championship on Fridays — ensures that women have main event positioning on two different shows every week. The introduction of WWE Women's World Championship and the continued Women's Tag Team Championship give the division further depth and multiple championship stories running simultaneously.
The 2026 women's roster includes a generation of performers who came up through the Performance Center system that Triple H built, alongside veterans who have been at the top of the division for nearly a decade. Rhea Ripley's physical dominance, Bianca Belair's athleticism, Charlotte Flair's technical precision, and the emerging generation of Tiffany Stratton, Giulia, and Roxanne Perez give the division a range of styles and characters that allows it to tell varied stories from week to week.
The WWE Women's Championship in 2026 carries genuine prestige because the women who have held it have invested in building that prestige through years of excellent work. From WrestleMania main events to Money in the Bank ladder matches to Elimination Chamber showings, women's wrestling in WWE has earned and maintained its place at the top of the card. The title's history — from Moolah through the current era — is one of wrestling's most compelling long-form narratives.
