Born in the NWA, refined by WCW, and now proudly carried by WWE — the Great American Bash is one of professional wrestling's most patriotic traditions. NWA and WCW Origins
The Great American Bash began as a summer touring show run by the NWA in 1985, with Dusty Rhodes headlining stadium events across the American South. When WCW took over from the NWA, the Bash became their signature Fourth of July event — a patriotic extravaganza featuring Ric Flair, Sting, Lex Luger, and Goldberg in legendary matchups. WCW's 1996 Bash saw the New World Order angle explode, one of wrestling's most pivotal moments.

US Championship Traditions
The United States Championship has always been at the heart of the Great American Bash. No title better embodies the event's patriotic spirit, and WWE leans into this tradition in 2026 by booking the US title match as a centrepiece of the card. Past champions who have shone at the Bash include John Cena — who had a legendary US Championship open challenge run — Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, and Booker T. The 2026 edition maintains that championship legacy.

WWE ran the Great American Bash from 2004 to 2008 before retiring the name, then brought it back on SmackDown as a special episode in subsequent years. In 2026 it has been elevated back to full premium live event status. The modern event respects the patriotic theme while delivering a full night of main roster action. With the USA hosting the 2026 World Cup in the same year, national pride is running exceptionally high — WWE capitalises brilliantly on that atmosphere.
