The Nine-Day Rematch and the Riyadh Hangover
A title change in Riyadh should feel like a tectonic shift. When Sami Zayn pinned Cody Rhodes at Night of Champions on Saturday, June 27, 2026, it ended a 113-day reign that had defined WWE's main event division. Yet, rather than letting the new champion breathe, WWE has booked the rematch for Raw on Monday, July 6, 2026.
This is a tactical error. Rushing a rematch in just a 9-day window dilutes the stakes and exposes a booking style that prioritizes television ratings over long-term storytelling. If a world title represents the pinnacle of the promotion, hot-shotting its defense on free television cheapens the chase.
The rush to book Zayn versus Rhodes on Raw cannot be understood without examining the commercial mechanics behind the Riyadh card. WWE Night of Champions featured a tight six-match lineup. Behind the scenes, the structure was shaped by television executives rather than creative directors.
How Corporate Broadcasting Formats the Roster
According to reports from WrestleVotes Radio, ESPN requested that WWE add extra matches to the card. The television network wanted to build up the paid portion of the show on ESPN+ after the opening hour aired free on ESPN television. This free-to-paid broadcast model is set to remain standard for WWE premium live events through the fall of 2026.
This corporate pressure creates a structural problem. When television networks demand more matches to justify subscription fees, creative teams are forced to stretch their rosters thin. The result is a card that feels padded, even when the matches themselves deliver in-ring quality.
The consequences of this thin roster management are visible across all WWE brands. On the June 30, 2026 episode of NXT on CW, a major match fell apart minutes before airtime. El Hijo del Vikingo was scheduled to defend the AAA Latin American Championship against E.K. Prosper.
As detailed when El Hijo del Vikingo was pulled, the champion suffered an injury during warmups. As reported by Mike Johnson of PWInsider, WWE officials chose to evaluate him rather than risk sending him out to compete. The television broadcast had to pivot instantly, showing a backstage angle with Keanu Carver standing over the injured champion.
Robert Stone scrambled to call for medical assistance before booking Carver to face Prosper instead. Prosper went on to win the match, but the segment looked rushed and unpolished. When the injury occurred, the lack of depth on the NXT roster became immediately obvious to fans watching at home.
While NXT scrambles to cover injuries, the main roster is grappling with how to value talent returning from the independent circuit. Matt Cardona's current run on SmackDown is a prime example of this struggle. Cardona returned to NXT in October 2025 before signing a contract that placed him on the blue brand in January 2026.
The Manager Deficit and Cody's Psychological Gap
Unlike his previous run, Cardona is competing under his real name rather than the Zack Ryder moniker, which became a talking point during Matt Cardona's return to NXT. Cardona told SI's The Takedown that he is proud WWE wanted to use his real name. He said: "They wanted Matt Cardona. I'm proud of that. That they thought the Matt Cardona I built on the independents was more valuable than Zack Ryder. And I'm grateful for Zack Ryder, because without him and my previous time in WWE, there's no Matt Cardona."
Yet, this shift in presentation highlights a broader issue in WWE's character development. Cardona noted that on the independent circuit, he could simply ride to the ring in a Ghostbusters vehicle if he wanted to. In WWE, that creative freedom is stripped away in favor of corporate formatting.
This corporate formatting is exactly what drove veteran manager Arn Anderson out of AEW in 2024. As explained during Arn Anderson's departure explanation on the ARN Show podcast, Anderson explained that AEW originally hired him to serve as Cody's manager and mentor. Once Rhodes departed for WWE, Anderson's role lost its primary focus.
Anderson noted that pairing him with Wardlow felt random and out of nowhere. He remarked: "But the angle with Cody — he took it with him, and it was just a matter of time because, you know, I did a couple of shows with… what’s the guy that was the big jacked-up guy? Wardlow. And, you know, it was just kind of out of left field, out of nowhere." While Anderson praised Tony Khan for treating him with respect and providing first-class travel, he admitted the creative direction vanished without Rhodes.
In WWE, Cody has traveled without a veteran manager like Arn Anderson at his side. This lack of a seasoned advocate backstage has left Rhodes vulnerable. Without a veteran to guide his tactics, Rhodes has made emotional decisions, including accepting this rushed rematch against Zayn.
Tactical Mechanics and the Raw Prediction
Sami Zayn is one of the most intellectually rigorous wrestlers in the promotion. At Night of Champions, he systematically disassembled Rhodes' offense. Whenever Rhodes attempted the Disaster Kick, Zayn stepped inside the arc to jam the knee.
Rhodes' signature offense relies on spacing. The Cody Cutter requires him to spring off the middle rope, creating a moment of vulnerability. In Riyadh, Zayn caught Rhodes mid-air with a powerbomb counter that shifted the momentum of the match.
For Rhodes to win on Monday, he must abandon his theatrical style. The rolling elbow and the dropdown throat thrust look impressive, but they invite counters from an opponent as analytical as Zayn. Rhodes needs to rely on his amateur wrestling background to ground the champion.
Zayn's path to victory lies in his signature suplexes. He will look to hit the half-and-half suplex to damage Rhodes' neck. Once Rhodes is dazed, Zayn will drive him into the corner with an Exploder suplex before finishing him with the Helluva Kick.
WWE wants fans to believe that Rhodes is on the verge of reclaiming his title on Raw. The promotional packages will emphasize his historic reign and his desire to finish his story once again. But the reality of the booking suggests otherwise.
This rematch is happening too soon. Rhodes is still dealing with the physical toll of the Riyadh match and the mental strain of losing his championship. Zayn, meanwhile, is entering the arena with the confidence of a man who has figured out the puzzle.
Expect a physical, exhausting match that goes past the 20-minute mark. Rhodes will hit one Cross Rhodes, but Zayn will roll out of the ring to prevent the cover. When Rhodes goes for a second, Zayn will counter into a back slide for a near-fall.
The finish will come when Rhodes attempts a springboard move from the apron. Zayn will drop-kick the rope, crotching Rhodes on the top turnbuckle. A corner Exploder suplex followed by a Helluva Kick will secure the victory for the champion.
Sami Zayn will retain the Undisputed WWE Championship on Monday night. Cody Rhodes will be left to contemplate the consequences of his rushed decision-making.
