The Darby Allin Era kicks off with a massive target
Let’s be honest: AEW finally pulled the trigger on Darby Allin, and the locker room is already a zoo. After the latest Dynamite breakdown, it is clear that the honeymoon phase is going to last about five minutes. Being the face of the company is a suicide mission when the Death Riders are busy abducting Will Ospreay.
Darby holding the strap is pure chaos, the kind that makes you forget your lukewarm beer. He isn't your traditional babyface who shakes hands and kisses babies. He is the guy who treats his own body like a crash test dummy for a cheap pop. It is high-octane, reckless, and absolutely what the viewer base craved.
The Ospreay Problem is getting serious
You cannot talk about the title picture without addressing the elephant in the room—or rather, the guy currently being carted off by The Death Riders. Will Ospreay was hitting his stride before getting abducted, and that leaves a massive hole in the momentum of the division.
When you have a top-tier athlete like Ospreay taken off the board, it forces the booking into a corner. Is he being written out for a program or just shelved because they don't know who should lose to Darby first? It smells like a creative pivot that could either save or sink the spring run.
MJF and the reality of the loss
Then we have MJF. Watching him react to that loss was like watching a guy realize his favorite team just blew a 3-0 lead in the seventh game. He is the best antagonist in the business, and without the gold, he is a much more dangerous animal.
Some folks are worried that dropping the title kills his aura, but they are dead wrong. MJF is at his best when he is chasing. The mid-card will become a bloodbath because he is surely going to take his frustration out on anyone with a pulse.
The booking flaws you can’t ignore
Let’s call a spade a spade: the transition from the old regime to this new, leaner title hierarchy has been bumpy. While Darby is a ratings draw, the booking team is clearly scrambling to find a fresh challenger for next week who doesn’t feel like they are just lining up to get tossed off a ladder.
We have seen this movie before. If they don't give Darby a legitimate, credible monster to dismantle soon, the title reign will lose its luster faster than a cheap pyro display. Pushing someone different is great, but maintaining the prestige requires someone who can actually hold their own in a prolonged feud.
Between the historic nostalgia trips we get from these podcasts and the current product, it is clear that AEW is trying to hit that 90s-era intensity. But 1996 had the nWo to anchor the chaos. Right now, AEW has a guy with a death wish and a lot of questions about where the rest of their main event roster is hanging out.
